If you are buying smart toilets for the US or Canadian market, the first spec to lock down is not the seat or the flush — it is the voltage. North American homes supply 120 V at 60 Hz, while many export markets run 220–240 V at 50 Hz. Order the wrong electrical variant and the unit will not run, or it can be damaged at first power-up. The short answer: match the destination, not the model name

The same smart toilet model can be built for different electrical markets. In North America the residential standard is a 120 V, 60 Hz supply delivered through a three-prong grounded outlet (NEMA 5-15, plug type B). In most of Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand the supply is 220–240 V, commonly at 50 Hz. A unit built for 220–240 V will not operate correctly on a North American 120 V circuit, and a 120 V unit connected to a 220–240 V circuit can be damaged.

Why a smart toilet is an electrical appliance, not just ceramic

A smart toilet is a ceramic fixture plus an electrical appliance: heated seat, warm-water wash, warm-air dryer, deodoriser, automatic lid, sensors and a remote. These systems are designed around a specific input voltage. That is why voltage appears as a variant on the spec sheet — and why it should be confirmed before a container leaves the factory.

What happens with the wrong voltage

  • A 220–240 V unit on a 120 V circuit does not receive enough power. Functions such as the seat heater and warm-water wash may run weak or not at all.
  • A 120 V unit on a 220–240 V circuit is overdriven and can be damaged. Do not test it "to see if it works."
  • Frequency also matters. Some electronics accept both 50 Hz and 60 Hz; others are tuned for one. Confirm frequency as well as voltage.

Voltage is a variant-level spec, so name the exact model

A buyer who writes only "smart toilet" in an RFQ leaves the most important electrical decision open. Certifications follow the exact variant

Electrical-safety and plumbing certifications are granted to a specific model and voltage variant, with a defined scope. A certificate for one variant or market does not automatically cover another voltage. For the US and Canada, the marks importers typically ask about are cUPC for the plumbing side and ETL/UL for electrical safety — but coverage must be verified against the exact model, variant and certificate scope. Ask for the certificate number, holder, validity, and the covered model/variant list, and check that the list includes the voltage variant you are ordering. If the supplier cannot show that scope, treat the coverage as unverified.

RFQ checklist for a voltage-matched smart toilet

  1. Destination country and expected outlet (example: US, 120 V / 60 Hz, NEMA 5-15).
  2. Exact model and configuration you want.
  3. Electrical variant for that destination: voltage, frequency and plug.
  4. Certification scope for that exact variant: number, holder, validity, covered model/variant list.
  5. Power connection style: plug-in or hard-wired, and any local code requirement such as a GFCI-protected receptacle in the bathroom.
  6. Sample voltage verification: if you order samples, confirm they are the same variant as the production order.
